The Subaru Outback is more than your average SUV. It has a lifted ride height and an aggressively styled exterior, but the station wagon body style is versatile and practical. There are just a few changes to the Outback for the 2023 model year. It now has a larger front grille, a new front bumper, and updated headlights. It also gains upgraded cameras with a wider view for the driver assist safety features. Here's a look at some of the details.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The Base Outback comes with 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, roof rails with crossbars, and LED fog lights. Step up to the Premium for heated and power-folding side mirrors and tinted rear windows, or choose the Onyx Edition for 18-inch wheels and a hands-free power liftgate. The Limited has 18-inch wheels, and the Touring comes with a sunroof. For more off-road capabilities, the Wilderness adds all-terrain tires, a front skid plate, lifted suspension, and black exterior badging. The Onyx Edition, Limited, and Touring also come in the XT trim level.
Engine (Power)
The base engine for the Outback is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine that puts out 182 horsepower. It works with a continuously variable automatic transmission. The Wilderness and XT models use a turbo 2.4-liter four-cylinder that develops 260 horsepower. This engine also uses the CVT, and no matter which Outback you have, it will have all-wheel drive.
Performance
The Outback provides a smooth ride on the road. It handles more like a car than an SUV, but can handle some rough terrain like an SUV. If you want more muscle, the upgraded turbo four-cylinder engine is the better choice. The 8.7 inches of ground clearance makes it easy to navigate in bad weather and the all-wheel drive gives you extra traction when you need it. When equipped with the available tow package, the Outback can pull up to 2,700 pounds with the standard engine and up to 3,500 pounds with the turbo.
Interior
There's room for up to five people in the Outback. The base has cloth upholstery and automatic climate control, and you'll get a power-adjustable driver's seat and heated front seats in the Premium. The Onyx Edition adds water-repellent simulated leather upholstery, and the Limited comes with leather upholstery and heated rear seats.
Technology in the Outback starts with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a four-speaker stereo. You'll get an 11.6-inch touchscreen in the Premium along with a wireless version of Apple CarPlay. The Touring adds integrated navigation to the tech features.
Safety Features
Every 2023 Subaru Outback has several advanced driver assist systems. They include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic braking, pedestrian detection lane-keep assist, and automatic high beam headlights. The Onyx Edition adds a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and evasive steering assist to enhance the forward collision warning system to help avoid collisions. Added safety systems in the higher trims include rear automatic braking, enhanced pedestrian detection and upgraded rear cross-traffic alert, and a digital rearview mirror.
